Axiom Brass Returns for a Nov. 9 Concert in Fort Smith

Axiom Brass Returns for a Nov. 9 Concert in Fort Smith (Posted: October 10, 2007)     (Printable Version)

Axiom Brass, a quintet composed of professional brass musicians and educators from across the nation, will appear in a 7:30 p.m. concert Nov. 9 in Breedlove Auditorium as part of the Distinguished Artists Series at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith.

Admission to the concert is $15. Tickets are available online at www.uafortsmith.edu or by calling 788-7300. Tickets are also available at the door.

The Nov. 9 concert will be a return to the Fort Smith area for the group. Axiom Brass gave its first concert in Fort Smith last May and performed again in June as part of activities during a weeklong Axiom Brass Summer Seminar for college and high school students.

Axiom Brass includes Kevin Sanders on the tuba. Sanders taught at UA Fort Smith last year and is currently on leave. Also in the group are New York trumpeter Steven Marx, Brazilian trumpeter Dorival Puccini Jr., Ohio hornist Nick Murdick and Oregon trombonist Henry Henniger.

Members of Axiom Brass have been trained in some of the world’s finest music conservatories, including Juilliard School of Music, and have performed across the United States and around the world. The performers have received numerous awards and are committed to the musical education of young audiences. The group’s performances are a mix of classical masterpieces and jazz charts, interspersed with witty humor and entertaining knowledge.

Joining Axiom Brass for a guest appearance on the program is Dr. Rosilee Walker, UA Fort Smith artist-in-residence, who will perform Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.” Walker said she is excited to bring Axiom Brass back to the local stage and to perform with them.

“They are so very talented,” Walker said, “and their shows are full of variety. They are inspiring musicians, and they give a concert that will be enjoyed by all ages.”

The Distinguished Artists Series is offered through the Academy of the Arts, which is an outreach program of the Music Department and administered through the Center for Lifelong Learning at UA Fort Smith. Upcoming programs in the series include pianist Jane Hsieh on Feb. 8 and members of the Sturgis and Rockefeller Quartets of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra on April 5.

For more information, contact Dr. Walker, who also serves as artistic director for the Academy, by telephone at 788-7546 or by email at rwalker@uafortsmith.edu.
