The University of Arkansas - Fort Smith and the Vietnamese Community Association of Greater Fort Smith are hosting a free Vietnamese New Year festival from 3-5:30 p.m. Feb. 14 in the Reynolds Room of the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center at UA Fort Smith.
The festival is titled “The Vietnamese New Year Celebration 2010: Year of the Tiger” and will include the Vietnamese dragon dance. Dragons are symbolic creatures in the folklore and mythology of Vietnam. Vietnamese food will be provided by local restaurants.
Vinh The Pham, president of the local Vietnamese association, said this is the third year for the festival to be held at UA Fort Smith.
“We really appreciate the university’s support for this event,” he said. “We expect approximately 500 people for this year’s festival.”
Dr. Paul B. Beran, chancellor at UA Fort Smith, has participated in the festival since it came to campus.
“I’ve really enjoyed learning Vietnamese culture,” said Dr. Beran. “It is great to know that our students are working with the local community to make this event successful.”
The Vietnamese Student Association at UA Fort Smith, headed by president Vu Tran of Barling, has been working on the festival with local community members for approximately five months.
Although there is no admission charge, Takeo Suzuki, executive director of international relations, asks those who are interested in attending to register by e-mail at international@uafortsmith.edu.
