Spring Registration Under Way for Academy

Spring Registration Under Way for Academy (Posted: December 8, 2008)     (Printable Version)

Registration is in progress for the spring semester of the Academy of the Arts at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith, with Jan. 12 as the kick-off for private music lessons, followed by starting dates for a children’s choir, acting classes, theatrical productions and activities for preschoolers and children.

Dr. Rosilee Walker, artistic director for the Academy of the Arts, said the spring semester will include numerous performances and concerts as well.

“UA Fort Smith has led the way in visual and performing arts over the years, and the Academy is one more result of those efforts,” she said. “The Academy, which began in fall 2006, is an exciting place for children and adults to learn and grow in their music and theatrical abilities.”

Private Lessons

Private lessons begin the week of Jan. 12 in piano, voice, flute, clarinet, trumpet, French horn, guitar, drums, trombone, euphonium and tuba. Students currently enrolled will automatically be re-enrolled. Others may register online.

Children’s Choir and Show Choir Kidz

The Academy Children’s Choir begins Jan. 14 and will meet from 4-5:30 p.m. in the Echols Conference Center. New students may audition that day. The Academy Show Choir Kidz begins Jan. 12 and meets from 4 to 5:30 p.m., also at the Echols Conference Center. Students must participate in Children’s Choir in order to audition for Show Choir Kidz. Both are for Grades 3-8. Nancy Mathis directs Children’s Choir, and Dru Baker directs Show Choir Kidz.

Acting Classes

Acting classes begin Jan. 27 and are offered for three separate grade groups, grades 3-6, 7-9 and 10-12. Times are 3:30, 4:30 and 5:30 p.m., respectively. Classes meet in the Echols Building, room 115. Missy Gipson directs.

YAG Players

UA Fort Smith in partnership with the Young Actors Guild provides the YAG Players, a small performance group that meets from 4-5:30 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday beginning Jan. 27. The first 25 to register are accepted for the YAG Players. On tap for spring is the April 17-18 production of Disney’s Sleeping Beauty KIDS, directed by Nancy Mathis and offered as part of the ShowTime Series.

KinderKidz

KinderKidz is a program of music, movement and theatre for children ages 3-7 and is directed by Alice Sanders. Participants for KinderKidz have an option of Friday or Saturday mornings. Classes begin Jan. 30 and Jan. 31 and meet in the Echols Conference Center.

The Academy of the Arts is a division of the Center for Lifelong Learning at UA Fort Smith. For registration and fee information, contact Walker at 479-788-7546 or rwalker@uafortsmith.edu. Information and registration forms are also available at www.uafortsmith.edu/academy.
