First, don’t call him “Mike” or “Michael.” Only “Smoke” will do for Michael “Smoke” Pfeiffer, guest speaker for the Jan. 18 joint meeting of the Ark-Homa Chapter of the Arkansas Archeological Society and the Oklahoma Anthropological Society, where the topic is “Historic Era Clay Tobacco Pipes.”
Pfeiffer will give a hands-on presentation on clay tobacco pipes and other tobacciana. The 7 p.m. meeting will be held in the Echols Conference Center on the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith campus. It is free and open to the public.
Pfeiffer, who is archeologist for the Big Piney Ranger District of the Ozark-St. Francis National Forests, has published 21 articles, monographs and book reviews on clay tobacco pipes. He has also co-authored another article and given eight presentations at professional archeological conferences on that subject alone. More are in the works. In addition, he has a 30-year long association with what he describes as “smelly, smoke-belching black powder firearms.”
Pfeiffer received a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln and a master’s in anthropology from the University of Idaho in Moscow. Before moving to Arkansas in 1989, he worked for the University of Idaho’s Laboratory of Anthropology and the USDA Forest Service, as well as the USDI Bureau of Land Management in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Alaska.
He also participated in salvage excavations for Idaho State University at Idaho City and Oregon State University at Roseberg. He has been involved with the Arkansas Archeological Society since 1993 in a number of ways, particularly as field lab supervisor for the annual training program. He currently serves as president.
The Fort Smith talk is hosted by the research station of the Arkansas Archeological Survey, located at UA Fort Smith. For more information, call Tim Mulvihill, Fort Smith’s research station archeologist, at 788-7812 or email him at tmulvihi@uafortsmith.edu.
