Four Named Cub Camp Chairs

Four Named Cub Camp Chairs (Posted: January 12, 2006)     (Printable Version)

Four UA Fort Smith students have been selected as chairs and will work directly under the directors for Cub Camp 2006, a three-day off-site experience for first-time, full-time freshmen at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith.

The new chairs are Cassie Boze, junior English major from Arkoma; Katy Schrodt, sophomore English education major from Fort Smith; Adam Shaw, junior business administration major from Fort Smith; and Brooke Whitney, junior early childhood education major from Springdale.

The four students, who all assisted with Cub Camp last year, will work with the 2006 Cub Camp counselors to help prepare them for camp, coordinate den groups, hold weekly counselor member meetings, host social events for counselors and coordinate meetings related to Cub Camp activities.

Boze said this year’s Cub Camp would be improved over the last one.

“Cub Camp ’06 is going to be better than ’05,” Boze said, “because we strive to improve, and that’s what it’s all about. This is what I’ve been waiting for, looking forward to — a chance to do it all again, only making it better this time around.”

Schrodt said she wanted to be a chair for Cub Camp because she wanted to volunteer her time for “something as worthwhile as Cub Camp.”

“I like knowing that I helped campers feel more at ease for such a huge transition in their lives,” Schrodt said.

Shaw said he saw being a chair as a way to positively impact lives, but also a way to have a great time.

“I won’t get as much person-to-person contact as I did as a counselor,” Shaw said, “but I will still be able to positively impact many lives … It was just plain fun, the kind I used to have as a kid.”

He said he wanted Cub Camp to help the freshmen make good contacts and come away with a “strong and healthy social network and memories of the best times they ever had.”

Whitney said she saw the positive impact of Cub Camp last year and wanted to make a difference in that way herself this year.

“I hope to make an impact for the campus by helping build leadership skills and allowing students to learn the rich traditions we have at this campus,” she said. “By the end of Cub Camp 2006, I hope we have a sense of unity among upper classmen and freshmen and that we have students who are proud to carry on the legacy of the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith.”

Jill McCormick, director of student programs at UA Fort Smith, said Cub Camp is divided into four separate camps within the camp, previously designated by color.

“We now have four UA Fort Smith faculty and staff members who have been selected as namesakes for the four camps for 2006,” McCormick said.

Selected were Lori Walker, director of marketing, (Camp Walker) green camp; Don Bailey, director of jazz studies and associate professor of music, (Camp Bailey) orange camp; Madeline Martinez, foreign language instructor, (Camp Martinez) yellow camp; and Dr. Carol Warner, associate professor of mathematics, (Camp Warner), red camp.

Already announced as directors for Cub Camp 2006 are Katie Schluterman and Ian Miller, both of Fort Smith; Leah Henry of Mountainburg; and Laura Sanders of Broken Arrow, Okla.
