4 Summer Music Camps Planned at UA Fort Smith

Summer music camps at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith include a band camp for middle school and junior high school students, a jazz band camp, a vocal jazz camp, and a jazz improvisation for strings camp.
The Middle School and Junior High Band Camp will be held June 6-10. The Summer Jazz Band Camp is set for June 13-17. The UA Fort Smith Vocal Jazz Camp will be held June 20-24, and the Jazz Improv for Strings Camp will meet July 25-29.
Middle School and Junior High Band Camp
The Middle School and Junior High Band Camp on June 6-10 at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith is for bands students finishing grades 6, 7 or 8 who have played their instruments at least one school year. The camp will be held from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. each day in UA Fort Smith’s Breedlove Building.
Campers will learn about performance techniques, warm-up exercises, etudes and related activities. Band rehearsals are every morning and afternoon. The camp will feature both intermediate and advanced bands. The bands will present a free concert at 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 10, in Breedlove Auditorium.
The audition music for chair position will be Set 1 from ASBOA All-Region tryout material. This is the seventh year for the university to host this camp, according to Charles L. Booker, director of band activities at UA Fort Smith. Fee is $75, due with a completed registration form by June 3. An additional fee of $10 will be due for late registrations.
Summer Jazz Band Camp
The Summer Jazz Band Camp on June 13-17 at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith is for any band student finishing the ninth through 12th grades. The camp will meet from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. each day in the Breedlove Building.
UA Fort Smith Jazz Band Director Don Bailey said this camp is the only one of its kind in Arkansas.
The camp will include rehearsals, jazz improv sessions, listening and ear training, and master classes. A free concert will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 17, in Breedlove Auditorium.
The audition music for chair position will be the same as the ASBOA All-Region Jazz Band tryouts. Fee is $65, due my May 27.
UA Fort Smith Vocal Jazz Camp
The UA Fort Smith Vocal Jazz Camp on June 20-24 at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith is for any student who has been in a high school choir for at least a year and is completing the ninth through the 12th grades.
Campers will learn music skills appropriate to the vocal jazz idiom. In addition to vocal jazz ensemble rehearsals, daily activities will include listening, jazz history and scat singing. Singers will be placed in a vocal jazz ensemble, rehearsing every day and culminating in a free public performance at 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 24, in Breedlove Auditorium. Students are required to attend.
The camp is directed by Thomas Lippert, choral director at UA Fort Smith. Camp begins at 9:30 a.m. and goes until 2:30 p.m. each day in Breedlove Auditorium. Fee is $65, due by June 1.
Jazz Improv for Strings Camp
The third annual Jazz Improv for Strings Camp is scheduled for July 25-29 at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith. The camp will meet from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. each day in the Breedlove Building.
UA Fort Smith Jazz Band Director Don Bailey said this camp is the only one of its kind in a three-state region.
The camp will include full jazz orchestra rehearsals, jazz improv sessions, and listening, ear training and theory. There will also be master classes and jazz combo rehearsals. A Friday night performance will be held at 6:30 p.m. July 29 in Breedlove Auditorium. Fee is $65, due by July 15.
