Ensembles

The UA Fort Smith University Chorale, under the direction of Dr. Rager H. Moore II, is the University's premiere choral ensemble. University Chorale is an auditioned group of 60 singers that performs a wide variety of outstanding choral literature from the Renaissance period to the present. In addition to four major on-campus concerts, this ensemble also presents concerts at various off-campus locations. The Chorale rehearses Monday through Thursday from 1:00 - 1:50 p.m.

Women's Chorus
The Women's Chorus, also under the direction of Dr. Moore, is a women's ensemble that pursues musical excellence with a broad performance repertoire. The Women's Chorus performs four major on-campus concerts each year. Rehearsal times are Tuesday & Thursday from 2:00 - 2:50 p.m.

Vocal Performance Workshop
Vocal Performance Workshop provides each student with a positive educational environment in which to practice the skills necessary to become an expressive and confident vocal artist. The workshop is designed to focus on solo and ensemble repertoire from both musical theater and opera, with individual instruction in music and dramatic preparation, interpretive ability, and the understanding of proper performance techniques. At the end of the semester, each member of the workshop could have the opportunity to perform an entire role as part of a main stage production or to perform a variety of roles in a scene program. Jazz Catz

The Jazz Catz, a select, auditioned ensemble under the direction of Don Bailey, is recognized as the state's most outstanding vocal jazz ensemble. They have performed with Manhattan Transfer and at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Other recent performances include the Mid-America Jazz Festival and the South Central Region Conference of the International Association for Jazz Education. They have worked with and been praised by noted vocal jazz arrangers Paris Rutherford, Michele Weir, Phil Mattson, and others. Symphonic Band

The UA Fort Smith Symphonic Band, under the direction of conductor Dr. Alexandra Zacharella, has developed an exemplary reputation throughout Arkansas and Oklahoma through its outstanding and exciting performances. The Symphonic band is the University’s premiere instrumental ensemble. The ensemble is an auditioned group of 60 instrumentalists that performs standard band and wind ensemble repertoire. Recent concerts have included music by composers, Ron Nelson, Philip Sparke, Vincent Persichetti, Alfred Reed, Gustav Holst, David Gllingham, and Norman Dello Joio. Guest conductors and composers such as Dr. Francis MacBeth and Dr. Steve Grimo have performed with the band in concert. Besides the four major on-campus concerts, the Symphonic Band presents concerts at various off-campus locations including a yearly spring regional concert tour. Jazz Band

The UA Fort Smith Jazz Band, under the direction of Dr. Ryan Gardner, continues to perform high-energy shows for sell-out crowds of more than 1,000 people. This audition based group has performed with the New York Voices, Dizzy Gillespie, Rolling Stones saxophonist Ernie Watts, and many more world-renowned artists. The band takes pride in covering a full spectrum of jazz music, from vintage to contemporary styles. The band performs several major concerts a year in addition to Noon Brown Bag lunch concerts, and other events in the community. The Lions Athletic Band is a select group of 40-50 musicians that perform at all Men's and Women's Home Basketball games. The Lions Athletic Band is open to audition to all university students. Brass Ensemble

Under the direction of Dr. Ryan Gardner, Brass Ensemble provides the opportunity for brass students to perform chamber music. This group features a full brass choir, brass quintets, trumpet ensembles, horn ensembles, tuba-euphonium ensembles as well as other various chamber instrumentations. Woodwind Ensemble

Various woodwind ensembles are organized by Dr. David Carter each semester to study chamber music from the standard woodwind repertoire. Ensembles include clarinet trios and quartets, flute duets and quartets, saxophone quartets, and woodwind quintets. These ensembles rehearse twice weekly and perform in various Arkansas venues and for the UA Fort Smith Ensembles Concert each semester.
