Study Hints

How to increase your chances of success in mathematics classes:

  • Come to class EVERY day. We cover new material every class. It is very important to not miss anything. If you get behind it is often difficult to catch up.
  • Do your assigned homework every day, as soon as possible after class. Figure out how to work the problems while the knowledge is fresh–then practice to reinforce the knowledge into long term memory.
  • Spend an appropriate amount of time studying. Expect to spend at least one hour every day on homework, two to three hours most days. The biggest difference between high school and college is the amount of work you’re expected to complete on your own. You should study 2-3 hours outside of class for every hour spent in class.
  • Read the Textbook. Get the most out of your textbook by carefully studying the author’s explanations and examples and work any matched problems in the exposition.
  • Take notes in class. Write down every sample problem, PLUS explanatory notes on the side reminding you why each step was done.
  • Take advantage of the large amount of additional assistance available to you:
    • Instructor office hours. Never hesitate to come and get additional help during office hours, or any other time you catch your instructor in the office. If your instructor is not available ask another mathematics instructor for help.
    • Learning Assistance Center Vines Building, first floor. A wide variety of audiovisual materials, as well as small group tutoring, is available through the LAC.
    • Mathematics Study Room (MS-UC 237) This room is set aside as a place for students to study. Equipped with tables and comfortable chairs, it provides a perfect space to study alone or with classmates. Math instructors’ offices are conveniently located on the attached hallway and the floor above. The lab also has instructional videotapes, and tutors are available during some hours.
