Search Strategy

ONE: Search the catalog using one of the basic types of searches:

Author Searches

Ives Burl

Authors can also be editors, composers, corporations, or associations.

Title Searches

Children of Coronado

In a title search, disregard the letter A and the words An and The at the beginning of a title.

Subject

Martial Arts

Subject searches are usually more precise than keyword searches. Use Library of Congress Subject Headings to select search terms.

Keyword Searches

Reincarnation

Keyword searches are useful for new topics or for subjects on which there may not be much information. Abbreviation or acronyms can also be searched as keywords.

Boolean Searches

Trees and Arkansas

Boolean searches combine two or more keywords and connectors (AND, OR, or NOT) to obtain precise search results.

TWO: Search the catalog and display one of the items retrieved from the search. Note the following information provided by the online catalog:

Floor Location

Call Number

Status or Availability

THREE: Go to the library shelves and locate the item. To check out items, or to get assistance with finding items not found on the shelf, go to the Circulation Desk.
