WHO Can Check Out Library Laptops?

Currently registered UA Fort Smith students may check out a laptop computer during regular semesters for use inside the library building only. A valid student I.D. card is required for check out. A valid University network login and password is required to use a laptop.

WHERE Can the Library Laptops Be Checked Out and Used?

The laptops are wireless and therefore can only be used within the library building, to keep them within range of the library's wireless network connections. The laptops may be checked out at the Circulation Desk for a period of up to three (3) hours or until closing that day, whichever is less.

WHAT Are the Library Laptops?

The laptops are Dell brand units running the Windows XP operating system.

They have the following accessories:

  • Electric adapter cord and unit which must be used if the battery is not installed.
  • Mouse [optional - the laptops have a touchpad built in]
  • Battery [optional - required only if not used within reach of an electrical outlet]

They have the following software loaded for use:

  • Internet browser software
  • Adobe Acrobat reader
  • Microsoft Office Suite, including
    • Word
    • Excel
    • PowerPoint
    • Access

WHAT Are the Fines and Liability for the Library Laptops?

Fines are $10.00 per hour or any portion thereof. Laptops not checked in by closing of the same day are reported as stolen.

The borrower is responsible for any loss or damage up to the replacement cost, which could be $3000 or more. Damaged laptops will not be given to anyone paying for damages, even total replacement costs.

WHAT Are the Conditions for Using the Library Laptops?

All regular campus policies for computer use are to be followed. The laptops are not toys, game machines, or amusement devices. They are to be used responsibly for academic purposes.

The person who checks out the laptop is entirely responsible for its safekeeping. Loss or damage will be charged to that person. The user is responsible for loss or damage - not the University or the library.

The Library Laptops must be used inside the library building.

Printing may be done to the left printer located on the second floor in front of the blue pillars. Materials may also be saved to CD-R or CD-RW, or to a personal USB Flash drive if available.

Only those devices such as batteries, mice, etc., which are available at the library Circulation Desk are to be attached to the laptop. No software is to be installed on the computer without permission of the library staff, and any such software will be deleted when the laptop is checked in.

The library staff will assist as possible with printing, use of the library catalog and research databases, and saving to diskette, but is not qualified to assist with the Microsoft Office or other application software. Computer novices should not attempt to use the laptops.

Problems with access to the campus network may be addressed to the Computer Help Desk.

Suggestions for Library Laptop Use

  • Do not leave laptop computers or any other personal property unattended in the library. The user is responsible for lost, damaged or stolen laptops and equipment - not the University or the library.

  • Do not move the laptop unless it is turned off and placed in its closed position.

  • Do not drop or otherwise treat the laptop or related equipment roughly.

  • Do not plug in or unplug an external device such as a mouse unless the computer and the external device are both turned off.

  • Do not expose it to any magnetic fields that could damage the electronics or the contents of the hard disk.

  • Neither the Computing Services Department nor the library is responsible for files remaining on the disk once a laptop is returned by the user, or for any loss of or damage to a user's files as a consequence of use of the laptop.
