Locating Periodicals on Dental Hygiene

Use a research databases to locate journal articles on dental hygiene topics. Be aware that each database will have unique terminology (thesaurus or subject browse) and limiters. Always open any drop-down box to see what searching options are available

Produced by the National Library of Medicine. It corresponds to the print indexes Index Medicus, Index to Dental Literature, and International Nursing Index. Subjects covered include clinical medicine, nutrition, dentistry, pathology, education, psychiatry, experimental medicine, toxicology, health services administration, veterinary medicine and nursing.

• To do a Subject search, change Keyword to MeSH Heading (Medical Subject Heading)

CINAHL Plus with Full Text 1982 to current

The Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature covers many different health fields. Scroll down the “Limit your results” options. Some examples of these limiters are:

Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition

This database indexes over 850 health journals and provides full text to 550 journals. Full text links are available for titles such as Access, Journal of Dental Hygiene, Journal of Dentistry for Children, Journal of Oral Rehabilitation and many more.

This database does not offer the number of limiters available in CINAHL or Medline. Two very useful options are:

• The “Subjects” link in the upper menu bar allows the exploration of terminology.
• A Medical Dictionary is useful to gather additional words and phrases to search on.

• Journals with a UA Fort Smith link display our local holdings from within the library online catalog. Check the LIB HAS field for beginning volume and date and also format. A few journals have electronic full text available from a link within the online catalog.

• Journals available in paper format are shelved on Rows 15 - 27 on the second floor of the library.

• Journals available in micro format are in metal cabinets outside Room 204 on the second floor of the library.

• Journals available online have a link to the database providing full text with holdings date information given. Click on the database link for a list of available issues.

Individual journal titles may be searched in the Journal Locator to determine the availability of full text.

Locating Internet Sources on Dental Hygiene

Use a search engine such as google.com or altavista.com

You may restrict your search in the Advanced Search option by domain, such as .edu or .org. This will filter out the .com and .net sites.
