Admitted Students FAQ

What is the ACT Residual and when can I take it? The ACT Residual is administered on the UA Fort Smith campus and can only be applied to admission at UA Fort Smith. You must contact the UA Fort Smith Testing Center at 479-788-7682 to reserve your spot. The test costs $29.

Where is the Admissions Office? Admissions and School Relations is located on the upper-level of the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center. Office hours are 8 a.m. – 6 p.m., Monday-Thursday, and 8 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Friday. You can contact Admissions at 479-788-7120 or toll-free at 888-512-LION.

Can I receive AP credit? UA Fort Smith awards credit for the AP program based on your placement scores. For a complete list, see the UA Fort Smith Catalog.

How big is UA Fort Smith? UA Fort Smith. The average class size is 23 students. The University has 20 major buildings, and you can walk comfortably between any two buildings in the time between classes (10 minutes).

When can I buy my books? Generally, books are available to purchase two weeks before each semester. Please note that you must have a copy of your schedule with you when you go to the Campus Store to buy your books.

When can I take a campus tour? Student-led campus tours are offered at Noon and 2 p.m., Monday – Thursday, and 10 a.m. and Noon on Friday. Please make an appointment in advance by calling 479-788-7120 or toll-free at 888-512-LION.

When are cheerleading tryouts? Tryouts for UA Fort Smith’s co-ed cheerleading squad are held each spring and at other times when needed.

Do you offer CLEP exams? Yes. Credit is awarded in many subjects. A complete listing with necessary scores and hours awarded is available in the UA Fort Smith Catalog.

What if I decide to go to college somewhere else? Once you’ve registered for your courses, you must officially withdraw. You may withdraw from your courses by logging onto LionsLink. If you decide to attend college somewhere else and haven’t yet registered for your UA Fort Smith courses, we ask that you let us know. Simply send your letter declining admission to: Admissions and School Relations, P.O. Box 3649, Fort Smith AR 72913; fax it to 479-788-7402; or e-mail us at mlloyd@uafortsmith.edu.

Why should I go to Cub Camp? Cub Camp is your best opportunity to meet other freshmen and upperclassmen at UA Fort Smith. Held prior to the start of fall classes, Cub Camp is a three-day, two-night event designed to acclimate you to UA Fort Smith life and Lion traditions.

When should I apply for financial aid? Although there is no designated deadline, we recommend that you apply for financial aid by April 1 to allow ample processing time for the fall semester. Applications are available in high school counselor’s offices or online after January 1. You must complete the application process and enroll at UA Fort Smith by July 1 in order to receive your federal aid by the beginning of the fall semester.

What’s Fort Smith like? A thriving city of approximately 80,000 residents, Fort Smith offers multiple dining, shopping, and recreation opportunities.

When should I apply for housing? All apartments are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, based on date of deposit. As the apartments are very popular, early application is encouraged. At UA Fort Smith, freshmen are not required to live on campus.

What if I can’t find my immunization records? Check with your parents and/or high school to see if they have copies. If you simply cannot find your records, you may retake the shots at your physician’s office or county health clinic. The Sebastian County Health Department, 3112 South 70th Street in Fort Smith, will provide immunizations for a nominal fee. Appointments are recommended. You can call 479-452-8600 for additional information or to schedule an appointment.

How do I qualify for in-state tuition? If you have been a resident of Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, or Texas, for at least six months prior to your first registration at UA Fort Smith, you are considered in-state for tuition calculation. For further information about residency, please contact the Records Office, 479-788-7230.

Do you have intramurals? UA Fort Smith offers fiercely competitive intramural sports in flag football, ping pong, basketball, volleyball, bowling, and ultimate frisbee.

Can I purchase a meal plan? Although a meal plan purchase is not required, many students choose to buy a meal plan to receive a discount. There are four meal plan options available. Contact the Cashier’s Office at 479-788-7060 for more information.

Where can I find out about jobs? On- and off-campus student positions are posted in Career Services. Federal work study positions are awarded via your financial aid application.

Does UA Fort Smith honor OHLAP? The Oklahoma Higher Learning Access Program is for students who attend Oklahoma colleges and universities. However, residents of Oklahoma are awarded in-state tuition to UA Fort Smith and may apply for all freshman academic scholarships.

Can I take online classes? UA Fort Smith is one of the state’s largest providers of real-time, web-based courses. Many of our courses are offered online. However, please be mindful that alternate delivery courses require a lot of discipline. We recommend that freshmen take traditional delivery courses until they acclimate themselves to the college classroom environment.

Do I have to pay all of my tuition when I register? No. Payment is due after classes begin, not during registration. For a nominal fee, you may arrange to pay for tuition, fees and books on an installment plan. Credit card payments are also accepted.

Can I register online? First-time UA Fort Smith students are required to register during a New Student Orientation (NSO). After that, you’ll be able to register online each semester.

What kind of student activities do you offer? With more than 50 student organizations as well as intramurals, fraternities and sororities, concerts, and events, you won’t be bored at UA Fort Smith.

When do I get my student ID? Student IDs may be obtained during Student Orientation. For more information about your student ID, contact Records at 479-788-7230.

Does UA Fort Smith accept an ACT superscore? UA Fort Smith does not use superscores for admission or scholarship decisions; however, your highest subscores are used to determine placement.

How do I know if I’ll need additional testing? Your admission letter will outline any additional testing that you may need for admission purposes. All students who score below 19 on the English, reading and/or math portions of the ACT will be required to take the COMPASS exam in the appropriate area(s). The COMPASS exam is administered on the UA Fort Smith campus and is free the first time you take it. Contact the Admissions and School Relations Office at 479-788-7120 or 888-512-LION for additional information about testing. Placement scores are current for four years.

Is there tutoring available? Absolutely! Stop by the Gordon Kelley Learning Assistance Center (LAC) in the Vines Building for extra material, free group tutoring, and more. Instructors provide old class notes and tests, audiovisual tapes, and computer-aided instruction. Hours vary and are available online.

What if I’m undecided about my major? You’re not alone. Deciding on a major is an important step in your college education. The first couple of semesters of a bachelor’s degree include general education courses that will count toward most any major. Consider taking a career interest inventory, such as the Discovery Test available in Career Services, to figure out what careers interest you most.
