Admission Process

The Admissions and School Relations Office assists all prospective students with the admission process by providing information on admission requirements, placement testing, financial aid, scholarships, and degree programs. Each prospective student's educational goal, previous academic experience, and placement test scores will be evaluated and will serve as the basis for development of an individual educational plan.

The University of Arkansas - Fort Smith encourages you to meet with an Admissions Officer or Academic Advisor to get answers to any questions you may have. Listed below are some of the most frequently asked questions about UA Fort Smith.

• What is the current enrollment?
  Fall 2007 enrollment was approximately 6,500 students.

• What degrees does UA Fort Smith offer?
  The University currently offers bachelor's degrees, associate degrees and certificate options. See a full listing of the degrees and programs offered by UA Fort Smith.

• What are the admissions requirements?
  The University of Arkansas - Fort Smith seeks students who will be successful in a higher educational setting. Please see the admissions requirements for specific requirements by student type.

• When will I receive an acceptance letter?
  Students who have applied to the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith will receive a letter stating the outcome of their application. The student's acceptance or denial to UA Fort Smith is based on the completion of the admission requirements and placement test scores. No person shall ever be denied admission based on race, color, religion, gender, age, or otherwise qualified students with a disability. For questions concerning acceptance, please contact an admissions officer.

• What is unconditional and conditional enrollment?
  Students who graduate from high school or receive a GED after May 1, 2002, will be evaluated for conditional/unconditional admission based on the conditions set forth by the General Assembly of the State of Arkansas. The law requires that public high school students must have successfully completed the college preparatory curriculum with a 2.00 (on a 4.00) GPA scale in order to be unconditionally admitted to UA Fort Smith. Conditional admission requires demonstration of satisfactory progress for continued enrollment. Please see the detailed explanation in the Admissions section of our course catalog.

• What is NSO and how do I register?
  NSO is New Student Orientation for first-time entering students or returning or transfer students with fewer than 12 credit hours. At NSO, you will:
  • Meet your academic advisors
  • Meet other new students
  • Select and register for classes
  • Get your student ID
  • Obtain a username and password for e-mail access
  • Get answers to questions about registration, degrees, courses, and planning
  • Learn how to web register for future terms
  • Learn about various student activities
    New Student Orientation is held in May, June, July and August. Students must sign up for New Student Orientation with the Admissions and School Relations Office. Please check with an admissions officer to ensure your admissions file is complete.

• What scholarships does UA Fort Smith offer?
  The University offers several prestigious scholarships for high school seniors. Most scholarships—including the Chancellor's Leadership Council, Roland Boreham Engineering and First Bank Corp. business scholarships—are competitive. • Does UA Fort Smith accept a superscore for scholarship purposes?
  The University of Arkansas - Fort Smith does not use a superscore for scholarships or admission.

• What is the ACT Residual and when can I take it?
  The ACT Residual is administered on the UA Fort Smith campus and can only be applied to admission at UA Fort Smith. It is given the first Wednesday of each month at 1 p.m. Students must contact the UA Fort Smith Testing Center at (479)788-7682 to reserve their spot. The test costs $29.

• When is the scholarship deadline?
  The final scholarship deadline is February 1 for high school seniors. However, the University does offer a priority deadline for specific scholarships. For more information about scholarships, see the scholarship guide.

• How can I apply for Financial Aid?
  You may complete the FAFSA online at www.FAFSA.ed.gov. Also check the Financial Aid webpage for more financial aid options.

• How can I receive more information about UA Fort Smith?

• Does UA Fort Smith have on-campus housing?
  UA Fort Smith features on-campus student apartments instead of dorms. Sebastian Commons Apartments offer one, two, and four bedroom floor plans with all utilities paid and affordable rates. Apartments are fully furnished and provide private bedrooms with study desks and locking doors; fully equipped kitchens with refrigerator, oven, stove, dishwasher, and sink disposal; an optional security system for each unit, and high-speed internet access.

• What is Den Day and how do I register?
  Den Day is an event for high school seniors or juniors and their families to preview UA Fort Smith. At Den Day you will receive valuable information about admission, scholarships, choosing a major, and making the transition to college. Also, you will hear about activities and organizations from current UA Fort Smith students who will share the Lion tradition with you. Register by calling the Admissions office at 479-788-7120 or register online.

• What is Cub Camp and how can I register?
  Cub Camp is an off-site experience for first-time, full-time freshman. This exciting, fun-filled weekend is designed to prepare students for a realistic view of college life and promotes school spirit, loyalty, and pride. Cub Camp is typically held in August each year. Register by filling out the Cub Camp on-line registration form.
