Associate of Applied Science
The associate of applied science (A.A.S.) degree provides the student a degree in a
chosen major in technical/occupational areas and is intended for students who plan
to enter the work force after completion of program requirements. Some A.A.S. degree
programs may lead into a bachelor degree through UA Fort Smith. The A.A.S. degree is
awarded in the following areas:
Associate of Arts
The associate of arts (A.A.) degree provides the student the opportunity to obtain the
first two years of the college credits towards meeting most of the general education
requirements and some of the prerequisites for the baccalaureate degree. Students may
complete bachelor degrees from UA Fort Smith or transfer to institutions of their choice. If transferring, students should consult the catalog, web site or advisor for the senior institution to which they will transfer.
Associate of General Studies
The associate of general studies (A.G.S.) degree allows maximum exploration of courses
by the student. It is not intended for students who plan to pursue a baccalaureate degree
or transfer to another institution. Although all courses for the A.G.S. degree are college level
and some are transferable on an individual basis, the combination of courses
selected will not normally constitute a major area suitable for transfer. Students planning
to transfer to a senior institution for completion of a baccalaureate degree should pursue
the associate of arts degree at UA Fort Smith.

technical/occupational area. These programs are intended for students who plan to enter
the workforce after the completion of the program or who are currently working and
want to upgrade their skills. Hours earned in most certificate programs are acceptable
