UA Fort Smith’s Administrative Professional and Office Technology (APRO) program is designed for those who are interested in preparing for new roles and expanded responsibilities in the office. The curriculum in the Administrative Professional and Office Technology program emphasizes high standards of proficiency in communication, technology, and information management. The administrative professional and office technology degree program offers an associate of applied science, administrative assistant technical certificate, and/or the office assistant certificate of proficiency. Students may select courses from three technical specialties.

Technical Specialities

Accounting Assistant

Bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks are an organization’s financial recordkeepers. They update and maintain one or more accounting records, including those which tabulate expenditures, receipts, accounts payable and receivable, and profit and loss. They have a wide range of skills and knowledge from full-charge bookkeepers, who can maintain an entire company’s books, to accounting clerks, who handle specific accounts. These assistants make numerous computations each day and increasingly must be comfortable using computers to calculate and record data. (U.S. Department of Labor, 2004)

UA Fort Smith's Accounting Assistant program of study provides you with both theory and practice of accounting principles. Students learn how to set up, open and operate a complete set of books, including the preparation of financial statements both manually and using computerized accounting software. In addition, general office procedures, computer, and popular accounting software programs are presented.

Career Opportunities

Our graduates are finding employment as accounting assistants, full-charge bookkeepers, accounts receivable or accounts payable clerks. Some apply their accounting knowledge to their own businesses.

Human Resources Assistant

Human resources assistants maintain the personnel records for an organization and provide authorized information about employee's personnel records. These records include personnel information, earnings, benefits, and tax withholding, These assistants record information, prepare reports, and increasingly must be comfortable using computers to organize and retrieve information. (U.S. Department of Labor, 2004)

UA Fort Smith's Human Resources Assistant program of study provides you with both theory and practice of human resource principles. In addition, general office procedures, computer, and legal issues are presented.

Career Opportunities

Our graduates are finding employment as human resources assistants, personnel clerks, and receptionists and information assistants. Some apply their human resource knowledge to their own businesses.

Medical Office Assistant

Every time a patient receives healthcare, a record is maintained of the observations, medical or surgical interventions, and treatment outcomes. The Medical Office Assistant assembles patients’ health information, checks to see all forms are completed and properly identified, and that all necessary information is in the computer. They regularly communicate with physicians or other healthcare professionals to clarify diagnoses or to obtain additional information.

Career Opportunities

Our graduates are finding employment as medical office assistants, health information clerks, medical billing and insurance clerks, and medical transcriptionists. Some apply their medical office knowledge to their own businesses.
