Carillon

About the Carillon

[IMAGE: Paccard-Fonderie de Cloches, Annecy, France] Forty-three Flemish-style cast bronze bells — varying in weight from 23 to 1,418 pounds — make up the carillon. They are arranged in chromatic order, three and one-half octaves above the lowest note
(F below middle C). The bells were cast at the celebrated Paccard-Fonderie de Cloches in Annecy, France. They can be heard at a minimum distance of a quarter mile from the tower. Three of the largest bells can also be made to swing, producing a harmonic peal that can be heard up to a mile away. This bell peal rings at graduations and other ceremonial occasions throughout the school year.

Carillon Composition Studio

The UA Fort Smith Carillon has an additional electronic composition facility located in the adjacent Breedlove Building where performances can be arranged, edited, and — if desired — recorded for automatic playback at the Reynolds Tower. The composition facility enables carillonneurs to play, edit, arrange, and — if desired — record performances for playback at the tower. Recorded performances can be printed out as sheet music and preserved for later study or arrangement. Performances can also be imported as MIDI files across the Internet for playback on the tower.
