Clay Coates

Clay Coates begins his third season as assistant baseball coach at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith.

At UA Fort Smith, Coates is the hitting coach and also assists the head coach and associate head coach with on-field coaching duties and day-to-day operations of the program.

A native of Conway, Ark., Coates is a 2000 graduate of Conway High School. He was a four-year letterman for the Wampus Cats in baseball, as well as a two-time all-state and three-time all-conference selection.

Coates earned a bachelor’s degree from Baylor (2005), where he was a member of the baseball team. He was a letterman on the 2005 Bears team that was ranked No. 4 in the nation and qualified for the NCAA World Series.

Prior to joining the UA Fort Smith athletics department, Coates was an assistant baseball coach at Arkansas Baptist High School in Little Rock, Ark., where he helped guide the Eagles to a region championship and a state runner-up finish.
