The Trident Maple is an excellent tree for small patios or use as a street tree. The bark of the tree provides good winter interest in the garden. The Trident Maple has good drought resistance and does not develop leaf scorch during dry periods.
Bark: Gray-brown-orange developing an exfoliating texture, on 2 - 3 inch diameter trunks.
Foliage: Opposite,
simple, 3-lobed, 1 1/2 - 3 1/2 inches high and wide with deeply cut
sinuses. New growth is a bronze-purple color maturing to a
glossy dark green in summer and changing to yellow, orange or red in late October to early November.
Flowers: Greenish yellow, borne in downy
umbel-like
corymbs with the leaves in March.
Fruit: Samara, 3/4 - 1 inch long. The wings are 1/4 inch wide and mature in October - November.
