Color of the Eye

By Cathy Mason

Have you judged me by what you have seen on the outside?
The next time you look into the color of my eyes,
Can you see past the color of the eye to the color of my heart?

Step inside my heart and look around its rooms.
What color do you see?
Yellow from fear, or brightness to be accepted?
Purple from courage and honor or the strength to have survived?
Red from pain and hurt or envy for what was taken from me?
White from purity or innocence waiting for trust?
Black from death and darkness or clear from the void of emptiness?

What color would describe a heart,
So full of love that it's about to burst,
But each time it reaches out all it feels is judgment and
Rejection?

Is it a game that we play,
To see whose heart gets murdered?
Or do we empty the bucket,
And never fill the well?

The next time you look in the mirror,
What color will you see?
You do not know me,
But still yet you knew me.
